Disposal Of Tektronix Products
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the proper disposal of Tektronix products. Tektronix's manufactures a large number of products and is unable to provide specific disposal instruction for each product. Hopefully the following will satisfy your information needs.
Generally, Tektronix products are similar in their makeup to other electronic equipment on the market. Our products may contain electron tubes or Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT). The CRTs consist primarily of glass, ceramic, stainless steel, and nickel. The fritted assemblies of the CRTs, and some of the glasses contain lead. Various phosphors are used, depending on the tube type. A minute quantity of barium is in the cathode. Circuit board assemblies in Tektronix products contain lead solder and copper. Other components within the products may contain small amounts of cadmium, tin or nickel as corrosion inhibitors. Some products may also contain nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries. Mercury may be present in minute quantities in fluorescent light sources. Arsenic is a silicon dopant used in the manufacture of some integrated circuits and, therefore, may be present in trace amounts in some of our products. The presence of these materials does not present a hazard through normal handling and use.
Although Tektronix products are not considered to be hazardous or toxic in normal use, casual disposal of these devices, the CRTs in particular, may be inadvisable. Specifically, higher than permitted levels of lead may be leached out of the CRT envelope materials when the CRT is subjected to the Toxicity Characteristic Leachate Procedure (TCLP) specified in 40 CFR § 261, Appendix II. There may also be local restrictions on the disposal of CRTs and electronic components in general or other applicable requirements that dictate how to manage these materials at the end of their life cycle. We recommend the following options that may apply to your situation:
1. If the products are in working condition, and are not waste to be disposed of, they can possibly be returned to Tektronix as product. Check with your Product Support Representative on this option.
2. If the products are waste to be disposed of, but are still intact (e.g., the CRT is not detached from the device), the entire device can be shipped to:
Tektronix RAMS
M/S 13-200
13489 SW Karl Braun Dr.
Beaverton Or. 97077
Note: RAMS may not be able to accommodate large volumes or pieces of equipment. If the equipment is other than an a single oscilloscope, logic analyzer or other small test and measurement device, pre-arrangements for return should be made with the RAMS manager at (503) 627-4253
3. If the product is waste, and the individual components no longer constitute an integral piece of equipment as described in item #2 above, the components of the product should be managed in accordance with your companies waste management practice and all applicable regulations. We recommend that CRTs be managed as a hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other applicable regulations.
